Six months on and kidnapped social activist still missing....
Sombath Somphone was kidnapped from his Vientiane office in December 2012. Police security footage show he was stopped at a police checkpoint in the capital and taken into custody. He has not been seen since. Asia director at Human Rights Watch, Brad Adams says; “The Lao authorities should realize their cover story is fooling no one, and start telling the truth.” Previously the Laos Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement confirming the incident. They claimed he had been kidnapped for personal or business reasons. They now claim they know nothing of his abduction. Enforced disappearances—the detention of persons by the state, usually the military or police, followed by a refusal to reveal their fate or whereabouts—has become a major human rights concern in Asia.(Regional Report)
