Three Australian men have been arrested in Lebanon.

The men were arrested in Tripoli sometime in the last two days, but the Department of Foreign Affairs says the reasons and the circumstances of the arrests are very unclear.

THREE Australian men have been arrested by Lebanese security forces in the country's north, foreign affairs officials say.

The men were arrested in Tripoli, Lebanon's second-largest city, in the past few days, a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman said tonight.

"The reasons and circumstances of their arrest are unclear," the spokesman said.

Consular officials from the Australian embassy in Beirut are in contact with Lebanese security authorities and have requested consular access to the men.

Consular officials in Canberra were assisting the men's families in Australia, the spokesman said.

No further details about the men were available.

However, some media reports say the men may have links with the Islamic political and paramilitary group Hezbollah.
