Lard Yao Central Women's Correctional Institution was established in 1963, locating at
Ngam-wong-wan Road, Lad-yao Sub-district, Bangkok. It is one of the two women
correctional institutions in Bangkok Metropolitan, and is the biggest women correctional
institutions among the 8 institutions of the whole country.
Unlike men's prisons which classified into minimum, medium, and maximum security
level, Lard Yao serves as all-security-level prison. Therefore, female offenders, both
remandees and convicts, are incarcerated in the facilities having a number of 1,520 as
general capacity and a number of 3,268 as maximum capacity.
Sentence terms of convicted prisoners range from 1 month to life imprisonment and death penalty. As of January 2005, there were 5, 159 inmates incarcerated in the institution.
Lard Yao is recognized by the Thai government for its excellent management and tremendous activities given to the inmates. According to the prison officials, sick and pregnant women are well and inmate's young children are well taken care of in the facility. Outstanding rehabilitative activities include computer training, fashion design, arts and craft making, cooking and catering, Thai classical music performance, choir performance and many more.
Lard Yao is a Thai prison and as such does not have the creature comforts of a western prison. Women sleep in large dormitories, side by side on straw mats.
Most women do work, either in the kitchens or other labor.
